Located between Macedonia and Albania, Lake Ohrid, with over 200 indigenous species, is a unique aquatic ecosystem of worldwide importance.
Although the lake is considered to be the oldest continually existing lake in Europe, its age and origin is not fully understood. Age estimates vary between one and ten million years, with a focus of between two and three million years, and both marine and limnic origin is proposed. Preserved sedimentary records spanned the last Glacier Interglacial Cycle (about 130,000 years) and show that the Ohrid Lake is a valuable archive of volcanic ash extension, tectonic activity and climate change in the central Mediterranean.
