Core Repositories

The first national continental core repository, initiated by GESEP, consists of two units in which GESEP acts as advisory board.

First, the branch office of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Berlin-Spandau is building and accordingly expanding its capacities to store solid rock cores. The second unit will be at the MARUM in Bremen where lake sediments can be reposited.

That way it is possible to guarantee a long-term and top quality curation of these valuable cores drilled with public third-party funds or comparable fundings.
The national core repository is ment to be a point of reference for scientists from all over the world. Most modern devices for non-destructive analysis allow scientists to accomplish the major part of their probes on the cores at the repository.

Marine Cores of the international projects DSDP, ODP, and IODP, gained in the Atlantic Ocean, can be stored and archived in the Bremen Core Repository (BCR).
