Laboratories, Observatories
The KTB Deep Crustal Observatory is situated in south-eastern Bavaria and belongs to the German Research Centre of Geosciences,GFZ in Potsdam and is an international project of geosciences and high-tech developments and part of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP).
- The combination of the two super-deep boreholes in basement rocks of Upper Palatine is worldwide unique and facilitates measurements and experiments at a site nowhere else possible in the world since 1996.
- Extreme high temperatures (up to 265° C) and extreme high pressures (up to 1000 bar) in the boreholes require high engineering demands on measuring devices and offer ideal test beds for high-tech developments.
