Drilling on Land
Major geoscientific drillings on land are coordinated and financed by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). The primary research topics are climate changes, earthquakes and fault zones, volcanic systems, mantle plume, meteorites, the geobiosphere, collision zones, and raw materials and resources.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam as well as the Federal Institute for Geosciences (BGR) and the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (LIAG), both in Hanover, are outstanding in scientific drilling and drilling related research, for example in studying the storage of carbon-dioxide and the quest for geothermal energy.
