Core Repository

Retrieving and investigating samples such as cores, cuttings, fluids are the main goal in scientific drilling. High costs and big effort is necessary to achieve this. Stored safely and well recorded, the samples are available for long time. Therefore, modern core repositories are an important element of scientific drilling.

At the MARUM, University of Bremen, a large core repository was equipped for marine samples, called the Bremen Core Repository (BCR). All core samples from the Atlantic Ocean drilled by the international projects DSDP, ODP, IODP are stored there.

At the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel the “Lithothek” is another large core repository for marine samples.
